Former Oakland player Drew Maynard transfers … a few blocks from Oakland
May 22, 2012 in Division I, NAIA
After a promising start to his college basketball career at Oakland University, Drew Maynard hit some tumultuous times. The former Lake Orion standout was suspended prior to the start of his junior season for violating team rules and eventually transferred to Division II Valdosta State in Georgia. Now though, he’s back in Michigan and, actually, back in his old backyard — he’ll play his final year of eligibility at Rochester College. From a Rochester news release:
Coach (Klint) Pleasant on Maynard:
“We’re delighted that Drew wants to be part of our program. He is obviously a very gifted basketball player. I watched him in high school and actually contacted a few coaching buddies (at NCAA I schools) to encourage them to recruit Drew. And then of course, coached against him when he played at OU. I’m excited for Drew to have the opportunity to finish his college career on a good note. I explained to him how excited I was to coach him, but also communicated what it takes to be successful in our program on and off the floor. He responded very positively to that. More than anything, I want Drew to have a good experience and grow as a person and a student. RC has helped a lot of young men do that and my hope is that it has the same effect on Drew too. He has the chance to make a huge impact for us on the floor and can play four positions at our level. He was extremely well coached at OU and has been exposed to basketball at the highest level. Our players have already embraced him and are excited as well.”
Scott Burnstein of The Oakland Press caught up with Maynard:
“It feels real good to come back,” he said at a small gathering of coaches, friends and family Friday afternoon at Rochester College. “This is where my roots are and where I have the necessary support network in place to provide me the best opportunity to have a memorable last season playing college ball. I’m going to help the team out anyway I can and I look forward to becoming part of the Warrior community.”
Paul Kampe of The Oakland Press noted that Maynard’s presence should make this year’s Oakland-Rochester game even more interesting:
The Warriors are tentatively scheduled to visit the O’rena at some point next season, as they tend to do in the Rochester series of benevolence.
If Maynard’s support system is in place as he says it his, his on-court production shouldn’t be a problem. He should be one of the more talented, athletic players at the NAIA level this season.
You forgot to mention he could be mistaken for your twin lol.
Rochester College isn't NAIA, it's ISAAC Division 1
