Former University of Detroit assistant accuses school of wrongfully firing him

Although details are still vague, it appears the University of Detroit‘s firing of its athletic director and two basketball assistant coaches just before the season started will eventually have more details emerge. One of the two fired coaches, Carlos Briggs, reportedly sent a cryptic statement to several media outlets, including the Detroit Free Press:

Former Detroit Mercy assistant basketball coach Carlos Briggs charged Wednesday that he was wrongfully fired in an effort by the university “to cover up the misconduct of others in the athletic department” — after he brought the allegations to the school’s attention.

Briggs, in his sixth season at Detroit Mercy, did not mention names in his statement, but wrote that “on Oct. 31 the wrongdoers in the athletic department who were the subject of my August disclosure were separated from service of the university.”

Briggs wouldn’t comment further to Freep reporters, but from the tone of that statement, he seems to be insinuating that he was fired for being a whistleblower on an alleged inappropriate relationship between former A.D. Keri Gaither and former assistant coach Derek Thomas. Obviously, there’s not enough information yet to understand what, exactly, happened, but it’s doubtful that this will just get swept away too.
