Tom Izzo sees a bit of Charlie Bell when he looks at Gary Harris

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has a tendency to compare his young players to former Spartan greats, whether the comparison is always apt or not. Draymond Green was Morris Peterson. Denzel Valentine is Draymond Green. The latest? According to Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press, Izzo thinks Gary Harris has some Charlie Bell qualities:

The latest No. 14, 6-foot-4 freshman shooting guard Gary Harris of Fishers, Ind., resembles the 6-3 Bell in more than jersey numerals.

“A bigger Charlie,” coach Tom Izzo said of the most heralded of four 2012 recruits. “Probably shoots it better than Charlie at the same age — everything else though is pretty much it. … Maybe not quite the offensive rebounding ability but getting there.”

Bell notably had to work on his defense after coming to MSU as a scoring machine out of high school. Hopefully, Harris’ size has his defense even more advanced at this stage in his career. If he’s playing D like Bell was by the time Bell left MSU, Harris will see a big role right off the bat.
